At least 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
